Leaving Public School for Homeschool
The last day of public school is emotional — relief, grief, panic, sometimes all before lunch. Your child may be thrilled or furious. You may be both.
Transition done well has three parts: paperwork, placement, and rhythm. Skip the guilt about what public school did or did not do. Start from where your child is today.
Week 0: paperwork (do this first)

Week 1: decompression (still learning)
Do not replicate seven 50-minute periods on day one.
Decompression week ideas:
- Library marathon + reading log start
- Bake and double the recipe (fractions)
- Nature walk with sketch journal
- Interview a grandparent (oral history = social studies)
- Watch documentary; child narrates three facts
You are teaching — just without the pressure of full curriculum yet.
Week 2: placement (be honest)

Buy curriculum at skill level, not ego level. A struggling third grader may need second-grade math for a semester — that is success, not failure.

Social transition
Homeschool does not mean isolated.
- Keep one existing friendship active (playdates)
- Add one new homeschool touchpoint (co-op, community forum, sport)
- Tell your child what to say: “We learn at home now” — practice if needed

- Child says they hate homeschool → adjust pace before quitting
