Second Grade Homeschool

Second graders have opinions and stamina — sometimes in the wrong order. This year builds reading endurance and math fluency so third grade multiplication does not feel like a cliff.


Skills checklist

Language arts

  • Read chapter books independently (with support)
  • Paragraphs with topic sentence
  • Nouns, verbs, adjectives introduction
  • Spelling patterns (long vowels)

Mathematics

  • Add/subtract within 100
  • Introduction to multiplication (arrays, groups)
  • Measurement: inches, centimeters, weight
  • Money: making change

Science

  • Habitats, food chains
  • States of matter simple experiments
  • Record predictions and results

Social studies

  • Neighborhood → state → country
  • Historical figures (age-appropriate)
  • Economics: goods, services, wants, needs

Multiplication without tears

Week 1: groups of objects (3 bags × 4 apples)
Week 2: arrays drawn on grid paper
Week 3: connect to skip counting
Do not rush to timed tests — fluency grows through repetition.


Teaching two grades?

Pair second grader with older sibling on unit themes (ocean, pioneers); split for math and reading levels.
