Five-year-olds learn through stories, movement, and repetition — not lecture halls. Kindergarten at home should feel like guided play with a plan, so you know tomorrow’s letter sound without scrolling Pinterest at midnight.
Skills checklist for this year
Language arts
- Letter names and sounds (upper and lower)
- Blend simple CVC words (cat, map)
- Rhyming and syllables
- Listen to read-alouds 15+ minutes daily
- Write first name; copy short words
Mathematics
- Count to 100; count by 5s and 10s
- Compare more/less; basic shapes
- Addition/subtraction within 10 (concrete objects)
- Calendar, coins introduction
Science
- Five senses, weather, seasons
- Plants and animals basic needs
- Simple observation journal (draw + label)
Social studies
- Full name, address, phone (safety)
- Family roles, community helpers
- Maps: land vs water, your city on a map
